Sunrise 2027: what it asks of brands and retailers

Checked against the sources on this page on

GS1 US describes Sunrise 2027 as a retail initiative for moving from 1D UPC barcodes to 2D barcodes, so that point-of-sale systems can read the new codes and brands can share more information.

What it does not require

You do not need everything finished by 2027. In the words of GS1 US, “it is not necessary to implement all the capabilities of 2D by that date”.

Your retailers may set their own timetable, so ask them directly.

Your QR code may not scan at the till yet

GS1 draws a line between the two kinds of code most packaging carries today. Traditional barcodes are typically scanned by companies for supply chain data. Traditional QR codes are typically scanned by consumers to reach a web page.

GS1 US publishes guidance on upgrading a traditional QR code so it also scans at checkout, by adding the same GTIN that is in the product’s EAN or UPC.
